Anthony A. Hyman

Prof. Anthony A. Hyman has been Director General of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) since March 2026. He holds a professorship of Molecular Biology at Technische Universität Dresden. Before returning to EMBL, he acted as group leader at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, which he was one of the founding directors of. 
Hyman’s research focuses on unravelling the intricacies of biological condensates and phase separation in health and disease. The Hyman lab studies how phase separation impacts the formation of such membraneless compartmentalisation of macromolecules inside living cells. Understanding how and why condensates form and how they can transform into irreversible protein aggregates has important relevance for studying neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and Alzheimer’s disease.

Guillaume Dumenil

Head of Cell Biology and Infection Department at Institut Pasteur, France

Currently Head of the Department of Cell Biology and Infection, Guillaume Duménil has been leading the Pathogenesis of Vascular Infections Unit (Institut Pasteur/Inserm U1225) since 2015. This unit studies the interactions between pathogenic bacteria and blood vessels in conditions such as septicemia and meningitis.

After graduation, Guillaume Duménil first focused on the molecular mechanisms of Shigella-related infectious diseases during his doctoral work. He subsequently undertook postdoctoral research at Tufts University in Boston, where he studied Legionella pneumophila, the bacterium responsible for Legionnaires' disease. Upon returning to France, he joined Inserm in 2002 to study invasive meningococcal infections at Necker-Enfants Malades School of Medicine. In 2009, he launched his own laboratory, conducting his research at the Paris Cardiovascular Research Center (PARCC) at the Georges Pompidou European Hospital. Guillaume Duménil joined the Institut Pasteur in 2015 to establish and lead his current unit and became Head of Inserm Unit 1225 in 2019.
